Screw bureaucracy, take charge

Easier said than done, I know. But someone’s got to take charge of the way things work at your organization, community or your family.

  1. If you’re at the top of the hierarchy, know that you have the potential to become the biggest bottleneck at your workplace. Accept that your biggest role is to solve problems that folks below cannot solve. Leave the details to them unless requested to delve into.
  2. If you’re at the middle, know that you won’t ever have complete autonomy unless you asks for it, define your boundaries and set expectations.
  3. If you’re at the bottom, know that your biggest contribution is the value your bring to the organization through your knowledge, skillset and experience. You don’t deserve to be treated like trash but they won’t listen unless you say something.

No, I don’t think you need advice on how to run your family and/or manage your social status. Just two things — don’t be a jerk and don’t treat others like one.

That’s it! It all starts with having the courage to communicate who you are and what you value the most. And it always begins with you.

Are you willing to take charge?
