It’s the time of the year when I spend more time to reflect, declutter, and donate the things I don’t need. It slows me down and I’ve always found it liberating.
The past few days I’ve been decluttering my messy wardrobe. This year I’m focusing on just keeping clothes that I truly need and like. And astonishingly, there’s a whole lot left even after I’ve pulled out 5 bags full of clothes that I don’t wear or fit me well!
While giving these bags away brings me great joy, the incident did made me wonder if I’m being wasteful of money and resources. I think I am. At least partially. While I might not be into fashion (or fast-fashion, as is the rage these days) but I often get this urge to buy something that I might need. So, I buy them. Only to discard them a few months down the lane because they don’t fit me well (god, I hate slim-fits!).
Perhaps, you can resonate with this. Or not. Regardless, being conscious about what you buy is a reasonable consideration. The alternative is to audit your wardrobe every month and see if there’s anything you can eliminate (not what you need, you can always come up with that list). The exercise forces you to be more conscious (call it reverse engineering) about what you have, what you need, and balance out the two.
In most cases, however, it will make your appreciate the things that you already have and perhaps be content with it. Or even get creative by adopting concepts like an interchangeable wardrobe, which I believe is the ultimate strategy for essentialists like me. (Great for the minimalists too!)
At the end of the day (or year), just remember that each of us have so much more than we think. All we need to do is look.
