How to get work done in a chaotic environment?

For most people, office will be the place to get work done. And while the rest might whine and complain how unproductive it is to get anything useful done at the workplace, you really don’t have much of a choice. Unless, you’re working for a company that offers flexibility to work anytime and anywhere you want. (So long as you get world-class work done on-time and every time, of course!)

But if your company doesn’t offer flexibility, you’ve got two options:

  1. Create an environment that supports you in your role. No, I’m not talking about persuading your peers to keep their mouths shut. That’s not going to happen. Trust me on that. Ask your boss to provide you with some space so you isolate yourself from all that noise and chatter. If that’s not possible, ask if she’s okay to have you work out of the office cafeteria (or the coffee shop right outside) with a pair of noise-cancelling headphones (bought by the company) on.
  2. If the above isn’t possible, look for a new job.

If it’s #2 and you’re arguing about the practicality of this advice, I can bet my fortune that you’re neither getting any work done nor it is important to you. Because productivity and focus go hand-in-hand and is a key aspect for success in any job and at any level. It’s not something you compromise on.

There’s only so much that you can focus in a single day and distractions make it all the more difficult. Guard your focus as if your life depends on it! That’s the best way to get work done.

What we often forget is that besides willpower our focus is one of the most important resource we have. Don’t let it go waste.
