The One-Sentence Guide to Persuasion

That sentence, my friend, is the only guide to persuasion you will ever need in your career and life. I’m serious. The following five points are all that you need to be your persuasive best:

Encourage their dreams — everyone’s got a dream or two but most people are told that it wouldn’t work or to be conservative or aim a little lower. On the other hand asking people to follow their dreams and telling them how to get there is powerful.

Justify their failures — if things didn’t work out in the past help them understand why it didn’t work out and how you way/methodology/idea will equip them with the right tools and/or guidelines for success.

Allay their fears — embracing a new way of doing things can be an intimidating experience. Telling people to not be afraid isn’t effective. Work with them and assure them that you are there to support them until they get totally comfortable.

Confirm their suspicions — acknowledging and confirming suspicions helps people trust you better. They feel being helped and that you have their best interests in your mind.

Help them throw rocks at their enemies — having a common enemy is a bonding experience. Think of all your favourite brands who came up with a product or a service that was far superior than what was already in the market — Apple, Tesla, Dell, WhatsApp, Facebook, Google, and countless others. These companies have fans, followers, and partners. Not just friends.
