Dad, why do you write?

I was taken aback when my 9-year-old popped this question. Nobody has ever asked me why I write; only what I write about. But it’s an important question nonetheless, one that most people don’t care to think about until someone (if they’re lucky) asks them.

For me, writing serves as an outlet, a tool to think clearly, and a powerful medium to solve problems, share deeper context, learn something new, and make you think. And I don’t think I would ever find value in writing if it weren’t for the valuable insights and learnings I have on a daily basis.

Essentially — I write, therefore I am*.

Why do you do what you do?

P.S.* Unsure why that sounds so familiar… I may have said that before (through words here on my blog or in a keynote).
